Inside Story
In the last 30 years, Spain has become one of the most exciting wine destinations on the planet. Not only have well-established regions, such as Rioja, been reinvigorated, but relatively obscure winemaking zones such as Ribera del Guadiana are becoming exciting wine zones. Located in southwestern Spain along the Portuguese border, Ribera del Guadiana is part of the Extramadura zone and was only officially designated as a wine region in 1999. Like many modern wineries in the region, Carabal does not rely exclusively on Spanish grapes. Its Cávea cuvée blends the French varieties Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah (84%) with Spanish grapes Graciano and Tempranillo, which add fragrance and spice to the blend.
In the Glass
This modern-style Spanish red offers meaty, lightly savory scents of plum, toffee and coffee. In the mouth, it delivers a rich wave of muscular, polished black plum and cherry fruit, accented with notes of mocha and orange zest.
At the Table
With its medium-full body, dark-fruit flavors and savory undertones, this big wine is a natural match not only with Spanish favorites such as a sausage-laden paella, but also with roasted, grilled, braised or pan-seared meats of all sorts.
