Inside Story
I Veroni is a mostly traditional Tuscan estate located in Chianti Rùfina, the elite, high-altitude subzone of Chianti that, along with Chianti Classico, produces most of the vast wine region’s best Sangiovese-based reds. Along with three traditional Chianti wines, I Veroni also makes this engaging red, which, in the modern “Super Tuscan” tradition, blends tart, cherry-inflected Sangiovese with French grapes—in this case, plump, plummy Merlot and inky Petit Verdot.

The estate itself is run by Lorenzo Mariani, a descendant of the Malecsi family, who purchased I Veroni in the early 1900s. Sprawling across fields, forests, vineyards and olive groves, I Veroni was once part of the vast feudal domain of the Conti Guidi family. Today it has come into its own as an important wine estate, thanks to the passion and zeal of Mariani. Aged in large, French oak barrels for up to six months, this entry-level offering hits all the pleasure buttons one wants in an everyday red.
In the Glass
Merlot gives this easy-drinking red its black plum flavors, while Sangiovese contributes juicy acidity. Notes of blueberry and spiced red cherry are ripe but invigorating, ending in a clean, vibrant finish redolent of ripe fruit and savory spice.
At the Table
The relatively light structure of this straightforward red mean that it can be enjoyed with vegetarian dishes as easily as with meat. A hearty Tuscan bean soup or rustic pasta dish with beans and vegetables won’t get overwhelmed by the I Veroni Rosso. At the same time, the wine has enough impact to stand up to meats, too—try it with grilled lamb, pork or veal chops, rubbed with fresh herbs and garlic.
