Inside Story
Best known for zesty, peppery Sauvignon Blanc, New Zealand has quickly become a significant player in red wine, too. The country’s cool climate makes it perfect for Pinot Noir, a heat-shy grape that needs mild, sunny days and cool nights in order to ripen fully. This example comes from the emerging Cheviot Hills district, in North Canterbury. Located (somewhat confusingly) on the South Island, North Canterbury is protected from rain and sea-driven air by mountain ranges, which create a drier, sunnier microclimate than at the coast.

Mt. Beautiful is a boutique winery founded by an ex-pat New Zealander, decorated economics professor and entrepreneur David Teece and his American-born wife Leigh. Rather than buy land in a more established New Zealand wine zone, the Teeces set on pioneering an emerging region. Their decade-old vineyards are already producing cool-climate wines that rival those from the country’s most prestigious districts. Acclaimed winemaker Sam Weaver fashioned less than a thousand cases of the 2012 Pinot Noir.
In the Glass
North Canterbury’s cool 2012 vintage brought out the delicate, lightly savory side of this Pinot Noir. Emphasizing finesse over power, the palate offers a supple, buoyant mix of wild raspberry, herb and earth tones.
At the Table
One of the great wine pairings of all time is Pinot Noir and poultry, especially feathered game such as duck, quail and squab. This delicate Pinot will also accommodate richer fish dishes, such as cedar-planked salmon and meaty tuna steaks. Fresh herbs, mushrooms and Asian marinades make great accents.
