Inside Story
If you know where to look, California’s wine country brims with bargains. Behind the scenes, top wineries often sell off barrels of finished wine to merchants called négociants, who release wines under their own labels, usually at much lower prices. The trio of wine insiders behind Rickshaw Chardonnay—industry veterans Baron Ziegler, Noah Dorrance and Steve Graff—work this system masterfully, relying on deep industry connections to source great juice and their confident palates to create overachieving blends.

This Chardonnay, for example, was crafted with a specific stylistic point of view that all three partners agree on: no excessively oaky flavors (toast, vanilla, smoke) and no fat, sweetly ripe fruit. Instead, they made the kind of wine they like to drink: clean, pure and bursting with juicy, succulent pear and apple fruit flavors. At least part of the secret of their success is sourcing; The trio seek out cool, coastal vineyards in Sonoma and Mendocino counties, where fruit struggles to ripen and grapes retain their natural, fresh acidity.
In the Glass
There’s a creamy edge to this Chardonnay’s bright pear and apple scents that’s reminiscent of crème brûlée. Juicy and almost Chablis-like in its acidity, it fills out the palate with luscious, vibrant white peach, lemon and mineral flavors and just a hint of vanilla oak.
At the Table
The succulent acidity in the Rickshaw Chardonnay makes it a flexible partner to food. Pair this relatively delicate white with similarly delicate seafood and poultry dishes, such as grilled scallops, flaky white fish or an herby roast chicken. Or, for a vegetarian take, try it with creamy or buttery pasta and rice dishes.
