Inside Story
Nestled in the very northeast corner of Italy, the Friuli- Venezia Giulia region lays claim to seven official quality wine districts (called “D.O.C.s”) and many of the country’s finest white wines. Some of the best examples are intriguing blends of native varieties with better-known international ones. “Rosazzo Bianco” is a new designation for a specific type of white wine grown in Corno di Rosazzo, a small, prized zone located near the Slovenian border, in the Friuli region.

Founded in 1969, Ronchi di Manzano is a family-owned estate run by Roberta Borghese, who took over its management from her parents in 1984. Roberta—helped out by her two young daughters—creates extraordinary wines that reflect the unique terroir of this hauntingly beautiful, Alpine-influenced corner of Italy. Working only with grapes that she grows herself, on the sloping hills (called ronchi in the local dialect) that offer sunny exposures and welldrained, mineral-rich soils, Roberta created this Rosazzo Bianco by combining the local Friulano grape with the French varieties Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc.
In the Glass
This white blend enjoys the fresh acidity typical of a Friulian white, along with a creamy texture that comes from aging and fermenting the juice in barrels. Chardonnay delivers ripe pear notes and richness, while Friulano and Sauvignon Blanc contribute zippy acidity and notes of grapefruit, flowers and straw.
At the Table
This Rosazzo Bianco’s acidity and texture make it a versatile food wine, pairing well with antipasti, shellfish, fish and light poultry dishes. Accents of fresh herbs, citrus and salty ingredients (capers, olives, prosciutto) will work beautifully.
