Inside Story
Matt Cline grew up helping out his parents, Fred and Nancy Cline, with his family’s well-known Cline Cellars. Fred is one of California’s pioneers of Rhône varieties and an influential Zinfandel expert. By the time Matt left Cline Cellars in 1989, he’d gained a deep knowledge of the state’s best Zinfandel vineyards, as well as friendships with many of the families that tend them. Many of these vineyards were planted a century or more ago by Italian immigrants. Often farmed without irrigation, these prized plots of old vines yield just a few, intensely concentrated berries each year and produce wines of outstanding complexity.
Given his connections, knowledge and talent, it’s no surprise that Matt continues to make superlative Zinfandel under his own label, Three. Even though this bottling is his entry-level Zin, Matt includes a significant portion (35 percent) of old-vine fruit, sourced from Contra Costa vineyards that are more than 100 years of age. Small amounts of complementary red varieties mimic a traditional “field blend,” in which different grape varieties were planted, harvested and fermented together. Located just east of San Francisco and cooled by massive air flows through San Francisco Bay, Contra Costa produces Zinfandel with ripe, luscious fruit flavors and succulent acidity.
In the Glass
What distinguishes this Zinfandel is its purity and freshness. It offers all of the deep, brambly raspberry and cherry flavors you expect in a Zin, plus a juicy, mouthwatering aliveness that’s rare for the variety. Notes of hibiscus and baking spices lend complexity to the supple fruit.
At the Table
Abundant fruit and a silky texture make this Zinfandel an easygoing sip, with or without food. Barbecued meats, braises, stews, roasts, steaks and chops of poultry, pork, beef or lamb make great pairing options for this versatile wine. Unlike many reds, it can stand up to the flavors of spice rubs and intensely flavored sauces.
