Inside Story
Winegrowing in Virginia dates back to the Jeffersonian era, but is now enjoying something of a golden age. The state boasts some 3,200 acres of vineyards and two hundred wineries, making it the fifth largest wine producing state in the country. Virginia’s humid summers can be challenging for some grapes, but thicker-skinned, rot-resistant varieties like Viognier, Pinot Grigio, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot have been quite successful in the hands of skilled growers.

Situated just a few miles from Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello and James Monroe’s Ashlawn-Highland, Trump Winery in Charlottesville, Virginia follows Jefferson’s footsteps in making new world wines inspired by the French wine regions of Bordeaux and Champagne. The vineyards are planted on the south-facing foothills of Carter’s Mountain, in the heart the Monticello AVA at elevations ranging between 600 and 1,000 feet. Trump prides itself on its sustainable growing practices and terroir-driven wines.
In the Glass
This rich dry Bordeaux-style blend has complex black and red currant, graphite and vanilla aromas and flavors of black plum, dried herbs, cedar, tobacco and vanilla with ample structure and balance.
At the Table
Reserve this serious red for red meat, like roast rack of lamb with mint jelly, a New York strip steak with a buttery Béarnaise or red wine Chasseur sauce. It’s also a good match for slow-cooked beef or pork dishes that will showcase the wine’s dark fruit notes.
