Inside Story
Yorba wines is the tiny label of Shake Ridge Ranch and the Kraemer family, longtime citrus and avocado growers who got into grapes thanks to Ann Kraemer, a daughter who became one of Napa Valley’s star viticulturalists. With an itch to start farming her own land, Kraemer scoured Northern California for her dream terroir and, in 2001, settled on the Sierra Foothills, a few hours east of San Francisco. Together with her parents, Kraemer purchased a rugged patch of land 1,700 feet into the sky and planted 46 acres of it to Mediterranean varieties, naming them Shake Ridge Vineyards.
Drawn at first by Kraemer’s reputation, and then by the stunning quality of the grapes, a coterie of A-list vintners now make wines from Shake Ridge Vineyards, including Favia, Keplinger and Forlorn Hope. Kraemer keeps a choice selection of the grapes back for her family’s Yorba label, which they named for an ancestor who emigrated to California in 1769. The winemaker is Ken Bernards, the talent behind the boutique Pinot Noirs of Ancien. Bernards blends an eclectic mix of the vineyard’s top varieties into this mountaintop red.
In the Glass
Two lush, fruity red varieties, Zinfandel and Grenache, make up the majority of this inky red blend, with small dashes of Petite Sirah, Graciano, Mourvèdre, Merlot and Malbec adding spice and structure. It’s ripe and intense, with fabulous concentration to its blackberry, clove and dark chocolate flavors.
At the Table
Constrast the Yorba Shake Ridge Red’s ripe fruit with savory red meat dishes. Because the wine is rich and fruity and its tannins are relatively soft, it can handle some spice and even a touch of sweetness, as with barbecued meats. Try it with a dish that offers both sweet and savory notes, such as a slow-cooked tagine or a soy-marinated steak served with caramelized onions.
